Overview

A day to see the south without staying overnight: the Tizi n’Tichka road climbs to 2,260 metres and drops into a landscape of red earth, kasbahs and palm groves. The ksar of Ait Ben Haddou is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has appeared in Gladiator, Game of Thrones and Dune.

Programme

    Departure from Marrakech

    We leave at 7.30am towards the High Atlas, stopping at the viewpoints along the Tizi n’Tichka road.

    Ait Ben Haddou

    Cross the river and climb through the ksar to the old granary, with views over the valley. Time for photographs and lunch with a view.

  3. 3

    Ouarzazate

    Visit the Taourirt Kasbah and, optionally, the Atlas Studios, the largest film studios in Africa.

  4. 4

    Return

    Back to Marrakech over the Atlas, arriving around 7pm.

Good to know

Is it very tiring to do in one day?

It is a full day with a lot of driving. If you can, we suggest turning this trip into the first day of a desert itinerary.

Can you climb to the top of the ksar?

Yes. The climb takes about 20 minutes on earth steps, and the view from the top is worth it.

Are the Atlas Studios worth visiting?

If you like film, yes. The guided visit lasts about an hour and shows sets of pharaohs, temples and aircraft.
